چکیده

W e address a n open and hitherto neglected problem i n computer vision, how to reconstruct the geometry of objects with arbitrary and possibly anisotropic bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) . Present reconstruction techniques, whether stereo vision, structure f rom motion, laser range finding, etc. make explicit or implicit assumptions about the B R D F . Here, we introduce two methods that were developed by re-examining the underlying image formation process; the methods make n o assumptions about the object’s shape, the presence or absence of shadowing, o r . the nature of the B R D F which may vary over the surface. The first method takes advantage of Helmholtz reciprocity, while the second method exploits the fact that the, radiance along a ray of light is constant. I n particular, the first method uses stereo pairs of images in which point light sources are co-located at the centers of projection of the stereo cameras. The second method is based on double covering a scene’s incident light field; the depths of surface points are estimated using a large collection of images in which the viewpoint remains fixed and a point light source illuminates the object. Results f rom our implementations lend empirical support to both techniques.

Helmholtz reciprocity in surface reconstruction: an overview

Reconstructing the 3D point mesh of an object from 2D images is a difficult problem. The task is even more complicated when the object has arbitrary and unknown surface reflectance. Traditional reconstructing techniques make explicit or implicit assumptions about the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), which represents the surface reflectance. A widely used assumption is tha...

Image-based Modeling and Rendering of Surfaces with Arbitrary BRDFs

A challenge of computer graphics is to render as realistically as possible manmade and natural objects. This paper presents a method for image-based modeling and rendering of objects with arbitrary (possibly anisotropic and spatially varying) BRDFs. An object is modeled by sampling the surface’s incident light field to reconstruct a non-parametric apparent BRDF at each visible point on the surf...

Time-Varying BRDFs

The properties of virtually all real-world materials change with time, causing their bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) to be time varying. However, none of the existing BRDF models and databases take time variation into consideration; they represent the appearance of a material at a single time instance. In this paper, we address the acquisition, analysis, modeling, and r...

DIRmaps : Discretized Incident Radiance Maps for High-Quality Global Illumination Walkthroughs in Complex Environments

Realtime ray tracing and interactive global illumination have recently made significant progress, allowing for ray traced rendering quality even in highly complex scenes. Nevertheless, high-quality global illumination is currently still limited to offline computations, as existing interactive techniques are applicable only to simple scenes, BRDFs, and/or lighting conditions. For realistically c...

Shape and Materials by Example: A Photometric Stereo Approach

This paper presents a technique for computing the geometry of objects with general reflectance properties from images. For surfaces with varying material properties, a full segmentation into different material types is also computed. It is assumed that the camera viewpoint is fixed, but the illumination varies over the input sequence. It is also assumed that one or more example objects with sim...
